ABSTRACT – Economy and Theology in Lonergan. On the economic theory of the Jesuit
theologian. Assuming B. J. F. Lonergan’s economic thought as a starting point, the writer
of this paper deals with the necessity to put together economics and theology after he has
analyzed the current economic crisis and the economic phenomena, that are involving the
world economics. By developing general methodological models, Lonergan shows not
only how it is possible to practice an economic theory which aims to the development of
man but he argues also that in the economic domain Transcendence has a very considerable
role. According to Lonergan the achievement of this dialogue is possible thanks to the
application of the method of self-transcendence as a way for the search of authenticity.
Authenticity can be achieved by learning from one own mistakes and by trying to understand
the causes. This search which involves an intellectual conversion, would also open
the way to several levels of conversion; such as from a moral to an ultimate religious one.
