Description
Summary
The Apostolic Exhortation Africae munus – Africa’s commitment – does not aim primarily to be a compilation of the duties of the Church in Africa regarding the enormous problems of the continent, but offers a profound description of the “treasure” which already exists there. Sharing this fundamental and unusual view of Africa, this article identifies three tasks for theologians given in the papal document. First, the Pope wishes that theology be transformed into pastoral care. This does not require the reduction of theology to practicability. Quite the contrary, theology should return to its sources: Sacred Scripture and Tradition. Secondly, the article explains the urgent task of arriving at an adequate inculturation in Africa in regards, for example, to the enormous challenge of the ongoing practice of witchcraft. The third task consists in the search for a deeper understanding of the Trinitarian mystery, which is described as a key both to understanding individuality and relationality, and which also offers helpful answers for the urgent questions of marriage and celibacy.
