Sommario – Uno dei periodi più sfuggenti della vita di Francesco è quello degli anni decisivi della conversione, del tempo cioè che intercorse tra i suoi primi turbamenti interiori e il costituirsi del primo nucleo di frati. Di quegli anni, uno deinodi cruciali è indubbiamente il rapporto che il giovane mercante mantenne conil vescovo della città Guido I, nodo al quale la storiografi a non sempre ha dedicatola giusta attenzione. Servendosi di tradizioni soprattutto assisane, trasmesse infonti come la Legenda trium sociorum, il De inceptione vel fundamento Ordinis,senza trascurare un signifi cativo apporto proveniente dalla Compilatio Assisiensis,l’autore dimostra che il vescovo di Assisi fu confi dente e guida di Francesco agliinizi del suo percorso di conversione. Lo stesso vescovo, inoltre, svolse un ruoloimportante di sostegno e aiuto del gruppo, nonché di consigliere di Francesco. Indefi nitiva, anche se gli anni in cui Francesco visse senza compagni restano permolti aspetti un mistero, possiamo però dire con una certa sicurezza che in queltempo egli non fu solo, perché aveva un sicuro punto di riferimento nella personadi Guido I.
Summary – One of the most elusive periods of the life of St. Francis is that of thedecisive years of his conversion, spanning the period following his initial interiorturmoil to the establishment of the fi rst group of brothers. One of the crucial factorsfor the young merchant during these years was undoubtedly the relationshiphe had with Guido I, the Bishop of Assisi. Recorded history has not always giventhis relationship the attention it deserves. Using the traditions (especially those ofAssisi) that are transmitted in the sources (The Legend of the Three Companionsand The Beginning or Founding of the Order without neglecting the importantinfl uence of The Assisi Compilation), the author demonstrates that the Bishop ofAssisi was a confi dant and guide for Francis at the beginning of his conversionprocess. Moreover, the Bishop played an important role in supporting and helpingthe group and in counseling Francis. Defi nitely, even if the years during whichFrancis lived without companions remain a mystery in many dimensions, we can,nonetheless, somewhat safely say that he was not alone, because he had a securepoint of reference in the person of Guido I.
