Dio Causa sui? Qualche riflessione sul Dio della metafisica e il Dio della Rivelazione

Abstract

L’espressione Causa sui si può attribuire a Dio se si intende dire, con tale espressione, che Dio è assolutamente libero. Infatti, tanto più un soggetto si dice libero quanto più è “causa di sé”, fine a se stesso, capace di autoderminazione, come afferma Aristotele nella Metafisica. Se invece ‘causa sui’ riferito all’essenza divina significasse “il far essere se stesso”, prendendo la nozione di “causa” nel significato di “causa efficiente che fa essere qualcosa che in qualche modo è distinta da sé”, allora l’espressione “causa sui” non può in senso proprio attribuirsi a Dio. E quando si dice che “tutto è in Dio” si esprime la dipendenza essenziale di ogni realtà da Dio: le cose sono divine perché partecipanti l’essere divino comunicato con l’atto creativo, non perché esprimono in modo finito, nell’apparenza storica, la stessa natura divina, quasi che il rapporto tra Creatore e creature debba intendersi come un rapporto, interno a Dio, tra Dio causante e Dio causato.

Abstract 

The expression Causa sui can be attributed to God if with such an expression one intends that God is absolutely free. In fact, a subject is called free in as much as it is “cause of itself”, end in itself, capable of self-determination, as Aristotle states in Metaphysics. If, on the other hand, ‘causa sui’ when referred to the divine essence were to mean, “bring oneself to be”, taking the notion of ‘cause’ as meaning “efficient cause which brings to be something which in some way is distinct from itself”, then the expression “causa sui” cannot be attributed to God in a proper sense. And when we say that “everything is in God”, we express the essential dependence of all reality on God: things are divine because they participate in the divine being communicated by the creative act, not because they express in a finite way, in historical presence, the very divine nature, as if the relation between Creator and creatures should be understood as a relation, internal to God, between a causing God and a caused God.
