With this new work from the Unique! collection, the museums of the Métropole Rouen Normandie have chosen to showcase far more than a single masterpiece of Impressionism. A whole chapter in the history of art unfolds through the study of The Portal and the Tour d’Albane, Grey Weather, one of a series of thirty works that transformed the course of modern painting. The picture invites viewers to discover its many dimensions: it explores Monet’s connection with Rouen, immerses the viewer in the challenges and triumphs of his creative process and, through scientific imagery captured during the painting’s restoration, reveals what the naked eye cannot see. Finally, it pays tribute to the boldness and generosity of its donor, François Depeaux, who wished to offer his city the ‘most Rouennais’ in the series of Monet’s paintings of the cathedral.
