ABSTRACT – Desire of the Other and Theology. Humanity and Divinity in Pier PaoloPasolini’s Il Vangelo secondo Matteo.
The article analyses the way in which Pier PaoloPasolini portrays the figure of Jesus Christ in his film Il Vangelo secondo Matteo. The keypoints of Pasolini’s argumentation are three. The first point is the figure of Matthew’sChrist as space meeting between Catholics and Marxists – in gramscian terms – in the lightof openness to dialogue proposed by the Second Vatican Council. The second one is thefigure of Jesus in his relationship with the underclass as a form of desire of the Other inopposition to the discourse of capitalism and to how it is described by Jacques Lacan. The third one is the contribution that Pasolini’s Christ gives to Christology in the directionof the Logos-Anthropos Antiochene Christology of Theodore of Mopsuestia.KEY WORDS – Pier Paolo Pasolini, Il Vangelo secondo Matteo, Second Vatican Council,Lacan, The Antiochian Christology.
