Forme architettoniche e «sensus Ecclesiae»

La costruzione delle chiese, impegno imponente di tutta la storia del cristianesimo, costituisce per la Chiesa una trama comunicativa che essa intesse con il mondo e, all’interno della comunità, tra i fedeli. Le diverse forme spaziali che si susseguono nel tempo non sono puramente funzionali all’evoluzione della liturgia, né il frutto di singolari intuizioni estetiche o del gusto variante nel tempo. Vi si leggono, invece, i movimenti e i travagli dell’autocoscienza della Chiesa, nella sua esperienza di fede e nei suoi rapporti con il mondo. L’articolo cerca di mostrarlo mettendo in luce, alla fine, cause e componenti della complessa problematica attuale, segnata dalla necessità e dalla difficoltà di trovare una nuova via.

Architectural Forms and «sensus Ecclesiae»

Building churches, that is an enormous engagement of all the history of Christianity, is for the Church like a communicative filling that is interwoven with the world and, within the community, among the faithful. The different spatial forms that follow on another in time, are not merely functional to the liturgical evolution, nor are they the issue of singular aesthetic intuitions or of a changing taste in time. On the contrary we can read in these different structures the movements and troubles in the self-consciousness of the Church, in its faith’s experience and in its relations with the world. This essay tries to show all that, stressing finally the reasons and components of the present, complex problems, that are marked by the need and difficulty of finding a new way.
